Exercises For Everyone
by Linda Hernestal da Silva on June 1, 2007

You have probably heard that it's caused by lactic acid well now research shows that it might not be the reason for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness as thought before. DOMS might actually be caused by stretching the fibers and muscles in your body.
You will not feel the damage you've done until after 24-48 hours. You will feel sore and might even have problems walking properly.
So how do you avoid getting DOMS?
There are different pain relievers you can use including; adding ice to the soar area, adding liniments and of course stretching. Stretching before and after will also help you.
If you have the opportunity to get a massage that is also recommended, at least it will give you some pain relief.
The best thing to avoid this is to go slowly on your body. Try not to increase your exercise level too much but take it step by step.
A study done in January this year found that caffeine could help as well. So that cup of coffee in the morning might not be so bad after all.
Take care when exercising and your DOMS suffering will be less.

Stretch out the affect muscle groups, do some form of low intensity exercise (or go for a walk or gentle cycle) after - even if it is the next day.
And yes - if you can get a massage :)
Enjoy.
