I'm on a diet - I can't eat that.
"I'm on a diet - I can't eat that".

How often haven´t you heard someone say that? It could be from you or from a friend who is trying to lose weight or lead a healthier lifestyle.

We usually receive invitations to parties with happiness, looking forward to have fun, enjoy nice company and good food. Unless you are on a diet that is. Then the anguish and worry about what you are going to eat starts eating you up and you don't really see the fun in going anywhere.
What if you eat too much? What if the desserts are irresistible? Then all your efforts are for nothing.

So what to do? It's quite simple actually; here are a few points to remember before going to a party:

* What kind of party is it? Will you be served dinner or are only nibbles served? If the latter, make sure you eat something light before you go. It can be a salad or some fruit, as long as you eat something.
* What food will be served? If you are allergic to something you need to call and ask so why not do the same when you are trying to watch your weight. You will know what you will get served and you might even be able to ask for something more light if the menu is "fatty".
* If you are at a restaurant and you order your own food a salad for a starter is a good option, ask for the dressing on the side.
* You don't need to eat everything you are served. The old "I'm saving myself for the dessert" trick is usually acceptable without the hostess feeling you don't appreciate her food.
* A fruit salad or sorbet is a good choice of dessert.
* Try to stick to wine instead of beer or other alcoholic drinks. Red is said to be better, why I'm not sure actually. A thumb rule is to have a glass of water in between every glass of wine.

Remember, you can go to a party, have fun and eat well without feeling bad when you are trying to watch what you are eating. By taking simple steps before and during the party you should be fine.
