Making Your Diet Work

Making Your Diet Work

Many people have gone on and off diets to no avail. Nine out of ten times they fail because of one or a combination of the reasons below. It is therefore important to watch out for errors you may be making, especially when you are already well in the middle of yet another diet plan.

Here are some common dieting mistakes and how you can work your way around them.

1. You are not fully committed to your diet. Half of the effort to lose weight comes from your attitude. If you are not ready to give it all your best, your dieting efforts will most likely fail. The best way to deal with this is to find a real source of motivation for you to lose those extra pounds. Find a good reason you truly believe in. Maybe you're doing this to have better health, or for you to be around for your kids long enough. In any case, you have to have a truly good reason to go on a diet and you have to keep believing in that reason.

2. You expect too much, too soon. If you have unreasonable expectations from your diet, you will one day realize that you're just not getting it. This kind of "failure" will make you disappointed and will most likely discourage you from going on. The key here is to be realistic in the goals you set for yourself. Most people will lose one to three pounds every week when they stick to a diet. Most of the weight loss will usually occur during the first few weeks and then their weight will begin to level off further in the plan. Learn to accept the fact that successful dieting results in a slow but steady weight loss.

3. You have an unrealistic plan. Extreme dieting measures will result in certain failure. Why? Because you haven't trained your body enough yet to go through drastic lifestyle changes. Going on a diet should be done in small manageable steps. If you want to go easy on carbohydrates, for example, try cutting down small amounts on a weekly basis so that you don't feel too much of the impact of a low-carb diet at once. Do it slowly, making small baby steps, so that you can ensure a better chance of being successful with your diet.

4. You can't forgive yourself when you slip. Accept the fact that as you go on a diet, there will be times when you will give in to temptation. Don't let falling off the wagon once make you forget all the efforts you have already put into your weight loss plan. In fact, you would probably be better off with your diet if you allow yourself periodic breaks from it. For example, you may want to treat yourself to a small portion of a sweet dessert after one week of going low-carb.

Biking and Brisk Walking Helps You Lose Weight

According to a new study by Harvard researchers, bicycling and brisk walking can help you lose weight. Didn't we know this already?

Anyways, this particular study highlights the fact that to maintain a healthy weight (especially in middle age, particularly in premenopausal women) you don't have to go to a fancy gym, train for the triathlon or live on wheat germ and brown rice... you can just include biking and brisk walking into your day -- as opposed to the common notion that rigorous exercise is necessary in the fight against obesity.

Therefore it is suggested that we should at least bike daily for 5 minutes. We can make it part of our commute to work. In fact, some companies in the Unites States give incentives to their employees who bike to work. Findings of the above-mentioned study ere reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Exercise is not an option!

Exercise is not an option!

Research shows that when life gets busy, one of the first things that we neglect is exercise.
Yet, exercise is necessary to stay energetic, young, calm and more than anything else long-term-healthy.
Of course the pressures of life can lead to exercise being somewhat cyclical, but it is highly desirable to make exercise a regular part of life to the extent possible.
One of the reasons people give up on exercise is because they have set their expectation too high, hoping to see huge results after only some work.
The secret to achieving a steady exercise pace is realizing that exercise is not primarily about body image but about physical and mental health. The results of exercise are more apparent at your doctor's or mental health clinic in other words. We all know how good we feel even after just one session at the gym, yoga hall, pool, park...
Naturally, there is the added benefit of looking fitter too.

Decide on a realistic fitness goal, set up a plan to reach it and remember it's far better to do a little than sit still!

You might know that breakfast reduces your chances of being overweight by a third. As it keeps you feeling full for a longer period of the day, it steers you away from calorie-rich snacks. Breakfast is an essential meal to keep fit and stay in shape. Furthermore, eating breakfast enables you to have more energy and mental focus as you go about your daily activities.
What you might not know is that if you eat breakfast you are 50% less likely to have blood-sugar problems, which could ultimately lead to diabetes.
The best breakfast to keep you fit, healthy energetic combines carbohydrates and proteins. Carbohydrates release energy quickly, whilst proteins release energy longer.

Here are some breakfast ideas combining the two:

- Non-sugary cereal and semi-skimmed mild with fruit
- Porridge with yogurt and dried fruit
- Scrambled eggs on wholegrain toast
- Omelet with cheese and tomatoes

The variety is endless, use your imagination, mix carbohydrates and proteins to set off your day with a daily power breakfast.

Floss to stay young

Floss to stay young

There are 1440 minutes in each day, if you were to spend only two out of those minutes daily on protecting your mouth against gum disease, then you have invested in the simplest and probably cheapest life-saving strategy.
Flossing is the most effective way of preventing gum disease, gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis, which starts with plaque, can lead to strokes, pneumonia, heart disease, loss of teeth and inflammation of the arteries.
It may sound far-fetched, but to floss is to care about your life.

So, how should you go about preventing gum disease?

1. Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice daily.
2. Floss once a day - Brushing reaches only the surfaces of the tooth, whilst flossing reaches the bacteria that otherwise remains undisturbed between the teeth.
3. Use mouthwash twice a day.
4. See a dental hygienist at least once a year.

If you follow these simple steps, paying particular attention to flossing, anti-ageing experts believe you are taking six and a half years off your real age.
